Event Title: Winter camping trip at Mr. McGimsey's Cabin
Date of Event: Mar 13-14, 2008
Location: Matanuska River between Sutton and Chickaloon
 Responsible Person: Mr. McGimsey

Person(s) Completing Report: Bruce Hopper
Person(s) posting to web: Bruce Hopper

This trip was primarily for the new Weblos cross-overs to ease them into winter camping.  The trip consists of an easy hike in (about 1/8 mile) and setting up camp around Mr. McGimsey's cabin.  The boys enjoyed sledding and a short hike down to the frozen Matanuska River.

The two patrols had to cook their own meals and clean up.  One patrol had beef stroganoff, the other patrol made a fine beef soup.

Everyone stayed outside for the event, the cabin was to be used only in case of  an emergency.  We all enjoyed the evening fire which was started by one of our new scouts.  Late in the evening we witnessed the tail end of an avalanche which cascaded down from the summit of King Mountain on the opposite side of the river.  Just before bed we all watched the stars and discussed various star formations and how to use the stars for night navigation.

In all, the event was fun and a great introduction to winter camping for the new boys.

Best Part of the Event: The avalanche and the trip to the river.
Worst Part of the Event: Crawling out of a nice warm sleeping bag at +4 degrees.
Scoutmaster/Asst Scoutmaster Comments: A big thank you to Mr. McGimsey for allowing us to use his cabin and for guiding us down to the river and back.
